Profile: I began teaching in 1968 and worked for three years At Hardye's School Dorchester, UK, and then for two years in the Internationale Schule Hamburg, Germany. From January 1974 to September 2002 I worked in Durham, UK, first in initial teacher training at College of St Hild and St Bede and from 1979 onwards in the University in a department that had many changes of name but was essentially Linguistics. I took leave of absence 1994-6, which I spent at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. After taking early retirement in 2002, I held fractional contracts at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK, (till 2006) and University of Leicester, UK, (till 2007). I also taught / supervised on a part-time basis at Universities of Durham (ongoing) and Leeds (till 2006). I was incoming Vice-President, President and outgoing Vice-President of IATEFL (2002-2006) and am currently on the IATEFL Conference Committee. I have also worked on summer schools for Anglo-Continental, Anglo-World, British Council, Pilgrims, Regent School. I am author or co-author of resource books for teachers in the areas of Academic Writing, Beginners, Literature, Newspapers and Writing, and of Doing Pragmatics, on the third edition of which I am currently working.
